Comparing Custom LCD TVs and Cutting-Edge OLED Displays

Over the past decade, the rivalry between LED/LCD and plasma TVs was largely driven by pricing factors. Today, plasma screens have largely disappeared, making way for advanced display technologies like OLED and Samsung’s QLED. Standard custom TVs typically use LCD technology, which relies on LED backlights, whereas OLED screens feature self-illuminating pixels that offer superior contrast. Both types deliver vibrant visuals in bright or dark environments, but their core differences influence viewing experience and pricing.

LCD-based TVs generally deliver higher luminance levels due to backlighting, resulting in brighter images. However, picture quality on LCD screens diminishes when viewed from angles off the center, which is problematic for large gatherings. OLED displays, on the other hand, maintain consistent picture quality from all angles without distortion. Currently, LCD TVs are available in a range of sizes from under 20 inches to over 100 inches, whereas OLED options are limited to 55, 65, and 77 inches. Given the price gap, LCD screens are more budget-friendly, making them suitable for those seeking good-quality images without overspending. Conversely, for viewers prioritizing ultimate picture quality and willing to invest or find deals, OLED screens are the preferable choice.
