The latest Ford Explorer offers a variety of trims tailored to different driving preferences. There are five trims: Explorer, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. The base Explorer features a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Optional engines include a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. All models come with standard front-wheel drive, with an option for all-wheel drive. Since its 2011 redesign, the Explorer saw minimal updates until 2017, which introduced refreshed styling and new features.
In 2017, the Explorer adopted the new SYNC 3 infotainment system, replacing the earlier My Ford Touch. Most buyers prefer the XLT trim, starting at $33,775, offering more features than the base model, including power-adjustable seats, keyless entry, and push-button start. The XLT is priced just above the base model, with the Limited trim costing $8,000 more and adding enhanced technology.
The Sport trim, priced at $45,355, includes features like terrain management, hill descent control, a sport-tuned suspension, all-wheel drive, and a towing package. While some features from the Limited are optional for the Sport, they can be added for an extra fee of $2,965. The top-tier Platinum trim costs $53,235 and offers advanced safety features such as collision warning with automatic braking, park assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warnings, rain-sensing wipers, inflatable second-row safety belts, and cross-traffic alert.
