Guide to Applying for a Social Security Card Replacement
A Social Security Number (SSN) is essential for accessing Social Security benefits and various government services. This document should be kept secure, and carrying it daily isn't necessary. To apply for a new or replacement Social Security card online, you need to:
- Create an account on ‘my Social Security’
- Be a U.S. citizen over 18 with a valid U.S. mailing address
- Possess a driver’s license or state-issued ID (check ssa.gov for eligible states)
If you require a name change or other updates, an online application may not suffice.

Tip: Submit original documents or certified copies issued by the authority; photocopies or notarized copies are not accepted. Obtain certified copies of birth, marriage, or divorce certificates issued within the U.S.
Applying for a replacement card is free. Beware of scams or agencies charging fees for this service.
Use Form SS-5 to request a new card. You must include proof of identity. If born outside the U.S., provide documentation of U.S. citizenship or residency. For updates related to name or status changes, supporting documents are required. There are no limits on the number of replacement cards issued for such updates.
